Paul Anthony Stewart ventured into acting out of sibling rivalry. He was raised in Philadelphia by his mother and stepfather, and has two brothers. One of his mother's favorite stories involves Stewart jumping on tables, demanding his parents' attention when they were focused on his older brother, who was born with cerebral palsy.
After performing as Mercutio in a high-school production of Romeo and Juliet, his drama teacher told him that he could act for a living, and he never looked back.
Following his graduation from Princeton University, Stewart went to New York City and landed a few plays, including Cyrano on Broadway. His success continued when he auditioned for LOVING. Originally, the actor tried out for the role of Cooper Alden, and so impressed ABC that the character of Casey Bowman was created for him.
In 1995, Stewart left LOVING to gain some new perspective. He had found himself overwhelmed by his success, and decided to return to his roots. He spent a great deal of time on his own, traveling. On a trip to New Mexico, Stewart realized that he wanted to be open to new possibilities, which took him back to New York, where he auditioned for GUIDING LIGHT. He landed the then-recurring role of mobster Danny Santos.

—He was born Paul Anthony Tomaccio, but took his stepfather's surname so he wouldn't be stereotyped as an ethnic actor.
