Y&R's Kevin: Zero to Hero

— By Deanna Barnert

2003
Hook, Line and Sinker: High school student Lily was wooed by an Internet predator with the screen name "The Fisherman." The pair soon started dating and it didn't take long for the manipulative man to persuade the young virgin to have sex with him. Unfortunately, Kevin's brand of statutory rape came with a dose of chlamydia. Lily's family was furious to learn she'd been taken advantage of, but Colleen went on the protective attack and almost paid with her life. Confident that Kevin was a predator, she went online, started a relationship with The Fisherman and set up a date at the park. When he showed up, Colleen tattled to Lily, but Kevin insisted her girlfriend was just jealous. Ultimately, Kevin's frustration over Colleen pushed him over the edge. He locked Colleen in Gina's refrigerator and lit the restaurant on fire, all with a frightening glee. J.T. saved the day, rescuing Colleen, but there was never enough evidence to fry the culprit. In fact, it was headstrong J.T. who landed in jail for attacking Kevin!

Oh, Brother: Still under investigation, Kevin had another shocker up his sleeve. He showed up at Michael Baldwin's office and smiled, "Hello, big brother. Long time no see." Through the contentious reunion, we learned about Kevin's abusive father (and Michael's stepdad) "Terrible Tom" and Kevin's feelings of abandonment since Michael left him in his dad's hands. We also learned about his firebug history and his electrician's training.

Guilty Till Proven Innocent: After his volatile arrival, it's no surprise Kevin looked guilty when Brittany Hodges was shocked on the stripper pole at Marsino's. Not only had Bobby Marsino fired him after hearing about his scrapes with the law, but Brit had given him the brush-off. As the investigation closed in on him, Kevin had a meltdown with his new crush Lauren Fenmore. After learning she was leading him on in the hope that he'd confess all his sins, Kev pulled a gun on her and then turned it on himself. She and Michael talked him down before harm was done. Det. Weber arrested Kevin and, thanks to a childhood of being locked in a closet, the troubled bad guy fell apart at the prospect of prison. Lauren paid his bail after one night, but he was back behind bars after trying to skip bail. That night, the pedophile was brutally beaten by three other inmates and he even flatlined at the hospital. Once he recovered, he decided to play crazy for a plea bargain. As Neil Winters finally handed over evidence that cleared Kevin, Kevin lit himself on fire! His scheme backfired when he tauntingly threw it in Det. Weber's face, only to learn Neil's evidence wasn't admissible in court. Sure he was done for, he took a doctor down, escaped from the psych ward and ran to his mother in Detroit. By the time he was found innocent, he was ready to see life in a new way.

False Heroes: Though the Brittany fiasco was behind him, Kev was still Mr. Unpopular around town. Worst of all, his "true love" Lauren wasn't returning his feelings, even after he agreed to go to therapy to make her happy. (Of course, he didn't go.) Instead, he fell in with the newly returned Daniel, who suggested Kevin save his name by creating a situation where he looked like a hero. They hired Alex to attack Lily at the recreation center opening, but he took it too far and slipped her GHB. Though the plan almost killed Lily, it was a success. Not only did her parents have to accept Kevin as a hero, but the paper did a puff piece on him. When Alex tried to blackmail them, Phyllis stepped in and scared him off. Michael was not pleased to get a report.

Fight For a New Start: Kevin was crushed to learn that his brother was dating Lauren and embarrassed about going on about her all that time, but a chat with returned Mackenzie softened the blow. Then Daniel told him fighting Michael would be a better plan than any revenge scheme they could come up with, so Kevin challenged his big brother to a fight. Mac, meanwhile, figured out the part he played in Lily's attack and urged him to confess. When he saw that Lily hadn't recovered emotionally, he did. He realized honesty was the best policy and then had it out in the boxing ring with an unwilling Michael. As the fight intensified, Kevin saw his father instead of Michael, and Michael realized what was going on. The fierce match ended with Kevin sobbing in his big brother's arms and accepting the relationship with Lauren.

2005
Fresh Start: The year began well for Kevin, who did a good job staying out of trouble, finally got into therapy and won the lottery. After he saved John's life, even the Abbott clan had to give him another chance. He also managed to sidestep a potentially rough love triangle between him, Mac and his pal Daniel, since Mac's attention was actually still on J.T. Kev played confidant to her, but didn't lie about his true feelings for her. To J.T.'s horror, the two became fast friends. There were even a few kisses exchanged before the pair decided to become biz partners and buy Crimson Lights. Gloria pulled her son into a few shenanigans and Kevin was frustrated when Daniel had to ditch their friendship to gain acceptance with Lily's family, but he was clearly committed to living a better life.

The Past Bites Back: Kevin's life was thrown for a loop when his father, Terrible Tom, arrived in Genoa City. He blackmailed, threatened and tortured Kevin, Michael and Gloria to get tons of dough out of them. As disruptive a force as Tom was, however, his time in GC allowed Kevin to face his history and learn to defend himself — to an extent! Tom was indeed terrible.

Kevin finds bliss with Jana (Emily O'Brien)

2006
Business as Usual: After falling in with Sheila and kidnapping Lauren over the holidays, Terrible Tom was shot by John Abbott. Then Colleen returned to town, horrified to learn that Kevin's standing in town was so good. But Kevin was doing well, getting entangled in a few of his mother's and Michael's schemes but not starting any trouble on his own. He learned much from his honest relationship with Mac and there was chemistry there, but she was still with J.T. When Mac got pregnant and miscarried, it was Kevin she turned to for support. That was the final straw for J.T. Kevin got one fantastic kiss from newly-single Mac, but then she left town to find herself. Kevin was left to run Crimson Lights on his own. He also served as Webmaster at Jabot.

2 Good 2 Be 4 Real: Lily's attacker Alex returned to town to cause trouble and expose Kevin and Daniel, so Kevin and Gloria came up with a plan to get rid of him. He was worried when funky coffee jerk Jana interrupted, but she jumped right in and helped frame Alex by staging a rape. Kevin and Jana fell into a sexy relationship and she fit right into the family. The couple was living together by the holidays.

2007
Full Circle: Carmen's murder had been the talk of the town since November, but Kevin was only involved peripherally. That is, until Jana decided to frame him for that murder — and two more! It seemed Jana had been after the reliquary's buried treasure and killed Carmen to avoid being exposed. Then, as the Newmans closed in on the treasure, she staged her own death and used the secrets Kevin had revealed to her against him. She locked him and Colleen in a refrigerator and lit it on fire! This time, Kevin played the hero, doing his best to keep Colleen alive before himself. By the time they were saved by J.T. and Korbel, they were both unconscious. Colleen was unable to breathe on her own and thanks to the evidence Jana planted, Kevin looked guiltier every minute. Michael and Lauren didn't question his story, but J.T. and Coll's family went on the attack.

Unfortunately, when Colleen woke up and revealed Kevin's innocence to her family, J.T. wasn't there — he was knocking Kevin out!
